WISDOM TEETH AND THEIR EXTRACTION;

The last teeth in our mouths are wisdom teeth. Because they usually erupt in our twenties, they are also called wisdom teeth. Some people are born without wisdom teeth at all, so they never erupt. However, sometimes, even when they do appear, they can cause eruption problems.

SHOULD EVERY IMPACTED WISDOM TOOTH BE EXTRACTED?

Not every impacted wisdom tooth needs to be extracted, but partially erupted wisdom teeth can easily decay because they can’t be easily cleaned, causing bad breath. Wisdom teeth that remain completely encased in bone and fail to erupt can damage the adjacent second molar over time, resting on its roots or sometimes forming cysts around them. These types of teeth should be extracted immediately if they become infected, causing pain or abscesses. If they aren’t causing any problems, they should be monitored and removed if necessary.

WHAT ARE THE SITUATIONS THAT REQUIRE THE EXTRACTION OF A WISDOM TEETH?

The most important reason for removing impacted wisdom teeth is to protect gum health. Another reason is to prevent tooth decay. When a wisdom tooth is fully or partially impacted, the bacteria that cause tooth decay can cause decay in the impacted tooth as well as the adjacent second molar. In this case, tooth extraction is necessary to prevent decay. The presence of third molars can pose a problem during orthodontic treatment. In such cases, surgical removal of the impacted third molars is recommended before starting orthodontic treatment.
